The catalog is a single file with the extension *.lrcat. The default location for LR's initial catalog is your Pictures or My Pictures folder on your primary (boot) drive, where a subfolder called Lightroom has been created. Some people have catalogs containing upward half a million photos. Only a few people who need strict separation of different aspects of their photographic activities, business and personal for instance, will need more than one catalog. Into the catalog you will put additional data relating to a specific photo, concerning the edits you will want made when you output ("export") a new photo file (LR automatically writes it to the catalog), alternative sets of edits called "Virtual Copies", organizational tags such as flags, stars or colors, and notes of membership in collections, which can span multiple folders.
You do not move photos "into" LR you move them to a folder on a fixed drive, either internal or external, and register ("import") data about them into the database (which in LR jargon is called "the catalog"), foremost of which data is their location - folder and drive. It cannot be open without a catalog (database) to display. LR, reduced to simplest terms, is basically a database display interface.
In general and for most users there is never any reason to create new catalogs beyond the first one that is automatically created Definitely not for a newby.
